Position: Philanthropy Advisor

Overview

We seek a Philanthropy Advisor to join JH Philanthropy’s Philanthropic Services team and support the delivery of high-quality, nonprofit-centered advising for a portfolio of clients. This role will report to the Managing Director – Philanthropic Services.

The Philanthropy Advisor will partner closely with team members to support strategic client engagements and lead the execution of grantmaking - from sourcing and due diligence to recommendations and reporting. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and relationship builder who thrives in a client services environment, brings an entrepreneurial mindset, and embraces the joy, humility, and accountability that define our team culture.

This is a remote position based in Chicago, Illinois.

Key Responsibilities

  • o Support the CEO and Managing Director in delivering strategic advising to clients, including attending meetings, tracking priorities, preparing materials, and following up with stakeholders.

    o Support clients in becoming high impact and nonprofit-centered philanthropists with clear and authentic philanthropic priorities.

    o Conduct research to inform giving strategies, provide landscape scans, or identify emerging issue areas.

    o Develop and present clear, presentation-ready materials, reports, or briefing memos for client meetings.

    o Lead philanthropic initiatives, collaboratives, and other special projects for clients as opportunities arise.

  • o Serve as the lead for managing all aspects of the grantmaking process for assigned clients, ensuring nonprofit-centered, high-integrity practices.

    o Grant Sourcing: Identify potential grantmaking opportunities aligned with clients’ philanthropic goals. Conduct thorough research and analysis to assess these opportunities' suitability and potential impact in alignment with clients’ goals and priorities.

    o Grant Analysis and Vetting: Evaluate grant applications and nonprofit partners through detailed due diligence, including financial analysis, program evaluation, and site visits when necessary.

    o Grant Recommendations: Prepare and present well-researched and compelling grant recommendations to clients, supported by data and in alignment with their philanthropic values and strategic goals.

  • Cultivate relationships with nonprofit leaders, peer funders, and field partners to stay abreast of trends, needs, and promising models—especially in Chicago and key JHP geographies.

    o Represent JHP and clients in site visits, learning convenings, or grantee check-ins.

  • o Client Project Planning: Support project planning by creating and managing annual and quarterly goals for clients, tracking progress, and ensuring deliverables align with client expectations and JHP standards.

    o Database Management: Maintain and update a comprehensive database of nonprofit organizations, grant opportunities, and client interactions. Ensure data accuracy and accessibility for team members and clients.

    o Quality Assurance: Monitor project activities to ensure alignment with established goals and timelines, flagging risks or inconsistencies proactively.

Desired Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Social Sciences) or equivalent experience

Experience:

o Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in grant management, development, or related positions within the philanthropic or nonprofit sector

o Experience in consulting or client service, particularly with high capacity/high net worth families or individuals preferred.

Skills:

o High degree of professionalism and judgment in managing confidential client and nonprofit information

o Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate financial documents, program metrics, and organizational effectiveness

o Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and compelling manner

o Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously

o Demonstrated understanding of the nonprofit sector

o Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment

o Self-starter with a bias towards action and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement

o Proven ability to work effectively across populations and build meaningful relationships with stakeholders from a wide range of lived experiences, demonstrating strong cultural competency

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary range for this position is $80,000 to $85,000.

Schedule and Travel: Role will include some evening and weekend work to accommodate client schedules, and some travel.

o Hybrid and flexible work arrangements. JHP is a member of the Impact House in downtown Chicago. Chicago employees will be in the downtown office twice a week and others work from home or at client site.

o Other benefits include a 401k plan with employer match (100% of salary deferrals up to the first 3% and 50% of salary deferrals on the next 2.0% of eligible contributions), a stipend for professional development opportunities, and donation matching.
